Welcome! This text is in essence my semester of work in my English 306 class at the University of Arizona. It includes all of my major assignments organized in the headers above for ease of access and use. I hope they serve as a reference to anyone who may desire to use them. Furthermore this text is an outlet for me to directly engage with the new media genre that has surrounded most of our lives. The blog section of this site allows me to speak to an audience of open ears and truly understand how new media writing is developing. This text therefore was used to expand my skillset in writing and creating, pushing it to new areas.
The central metaphor I used to organize my portfolio was originally going to be a toothbrush, representing routine. However, after careful consideration I have decided to organize my portfolio based on the central metaphor of a staircase. This portfolio, much like my life, is a staircase. Each individual step such as the genre analysis, blog analysis, digital story, etc. gets my one step higher and one step closer to the top. Each of the “steps” (assignments) brought me a little bit closer to being a better writer, being a more culturally versed member of society, and just simply becoming more accustomed to pushing the bounds. Some steps seemed to be taller than others, but they each lifted me up some. I truly liked organizing my portfolio based on this central metaphor because of my life goals. I want to be a doctor and that path is essentially a huge set of stairs. Undergraduate, then research, then internships, then the mcats then medical school, then residency, then fellowship, etc. I thought it was therefore fitting to model this assignment off of what will hopefully be my future.
You should take the time to read this portfolio, not only because you may find some of my assignments helpful or because they might serve as good references for your own work, but also simply because you might enjoy it. This is my first time trying this sort of thing. This text is basically an experiment. A journey to somewhere new, and I hope you all stay with me for the ride because while it may be bumpy there are likely to be some unforgettable sights and memories along the way. It’s not a journey you’d like to miss.
